About GCT
Background

This committee was established since the government, particularly the Deputy Minister of Commerce – Mr. Alongkorn Ponlaboot, has been aware of the global economic slowdown which has affected Thai entrepreneurs in many businesses, especially the gem and jewelry business. This can be seen from the facts that entrepreneurs have successively closed down their business and that there has been unemployment among craftsmen. Therefore, the Gem and Jewelry Business Development Committee of Thailand was founded and Mr. Preecha Pongjaroenkul was appointed as Chairman of the Committee.

Role and Policy

This committee was established as the center for collaboration between the public and private sectors in order to solve various problems related to the gem and jewelry business. Government agencies, including Department of Export Promotion, Department of Business Development, the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization), The Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (Public Organization), and about twenty other agencies, and private agencies, such as Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association, Thai Gem and Jewelry Manufacturers Association, Gold Traders Association, Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Traders Association, and about ten other agencies with expertise in gems and jewelry are brought together to help find solutions to various problems. Fourteen subcommittees were founded to deal with and solve urgent problems.

Goal and Vision

Our goal and vision is to promote, develop, and drive Thai gems and jewelry to gain credibility and acceptance at the international level. This is in line with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s policy which aims to drive and strengthen the Thai gem and jewelry industry.
